SCY News: October 2021 Edition

October 2021 Edition

The Catholic Church dedicates the month of October to the Holy Rosary.

October includes the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7). The best way to celebrate the month is, of course, to pray the Rosary. Why bother praying the rosary, you may be asking?

  1. It allows you to meditate and reflect on key events of Jesus' ministry through Scripture.
  2. It helps us grow in holiness, asking for Mary's intercession in growing in virtue.
  3. It weakens the devil, with Mary protecting us from his evil works and temptations.
  4. This beautiful prayer helps slow down our busy lives, with Mary offering us the blessing of true peace.
  5. It is a great way to pray for others, especially those people who have asked you to pray for them and you may have forgotten...
  6. When you might not have the words to pray or don't know how to pray, the Rosary can be the words that we might not have at the time.
  7. Have you read the 15 Promises of the Rosary, given to St Dominic from the Blessed Virgin Mary?

So gather your friends, or your families, or just yourself, set aside some time and pray the Rosary. Even if you can only fit in a decade or two!

If you're needing some inspiration or struggling to stay focused, have a look at some of these Rosary resources:

"The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer. It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all blessings. There is no more excellent way of praying."  [Pope Leo XIII]

🙏 📖 BLESSED Advent & Christmas Reflections 2021 | SELLING FAST!

Advent is edging closer and sales are ramping up for our Blessed—Daily Advent and Christmas Reflections 2021 book including discount pricing for bulk orders as well as a GST free option for Australian Catholic Religious Groups!

This year has been a rollercoaster of emotions and challenges, especially in light of the pandemic. As we hopefully ease back into the routines of our lives from the advent of lockdown, may we see how our re-emergence into new life mirrors the Advent season as we await the birth of the Saviour. God chose Mary to give birth to Jesus, and Christ has chosen us as his dwelling when we meditate on his Word and receive him in the Eucharist.

As we countdown the days to Christmas, we pray that by meditating on God's Word in these daily Advent and Christmas reflections, you may be graced with moments of silence to ponder in your heart (cf. Lk 2:19) the many "blessings" in your life—inspiring you in your call to "blessedness" (that is, "holiness") where true happiness is gained (cf. Pope Francis, Gaudete et exsultate, 64).

Blessed is a 92-page pocket-size book containing short spiritually rich, yet accessible, daily reflections from the beginning of Advent (28 November 2021) through to the Baptism of the Lord (9 January 2022).

Blessed also features beautiful religious artworks from the Masters such as Murillo, Strozzi, Jouvenet, Botticelli and Reni with enlightening "Artwork Spotlight" reflections written by the popular Monsignor Graham Schmitzer.

Many of your favourite contributors are back with us this year including: Mother Hilda Scott OSB, Fr Antony Jukes OFM, Sr Anastasia Reeves OP, Fr Christopher G Sarkis, Sr Elena Marie Piteo OP, Fr Sean Cullen, Therese Mills MGL, Peter Gilmore, Trish McCarthy, Fr Mark De Battista, Fr Dan Serratore MGL, Sr Magdalen Mather OSB, Matthew Okinga, Sr Mary Helen Hill OP, Fr Richard Green OSPPE, Michelle Vass, Jude Hennessy, Darren McDowell, Seth Harsh and Ken Bryant. We also have some brilliant new contributors this year including: Katherine Stone MGL, Br Lewis Harwood DLS and Bernadette Toohey MGL.

We are excited to bring you the wisdom and spiritual direction of these wonderful contributors, so don't delay in purchasing your copies before they all sell out. Many customers buy bulk copies of the book for family and friends as an alternative to Christmas cards. We have included a page in the book for you to write your Christmas gift message.

Bishop Brian launches the Bishop’s Annual Appeal 2021

Given that our church buildings are closed, I have decided to write to you and share some information about the Bishop's Annual Appeal. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

My sincere greetings to you, and to your family.

As our church buildings are closed, I have decided to personally write to you about the Bishop's Annual Appeal, an appeal that you would normally hear about from your parish priest, and in the past have supported when you have attended Mass.

The Bishop's Annual Appeal is currently being held in our diocese, and necessarily, it has moved to an online appeal.

This year, gifts made in response to the Bishop's Annual Appeal will support two important ministries:

·         Supporting the retirement and health of our clergy - Caring for those who have cared for us

·         Supporting local parish ministries Staying connected during this time of pandemic

To learn more about the focus of the appeal, view the special appeal video, and to make a donation please visit us below:

Recognising that we are called to help one another through prayer and action, your donation to this appeal will enable me to provide a dignified retirement for our diocesan clergy and ensure that our parish communities stay connected during this time of pandemic. I know that there are many pressures on families at this time, but if you are in a position to give, I would be very grateful if you would consider giving to this appeal.

Sean, I pray that you and your family remain safe and well, and I look forward to the day that we are all able to be together again to celebrate the sacraments.

Yours in Christ

Most Rev Brian G Mascord DD
