Human dignity and establishing real relationship remain key challenges to addressing persistent and increasing levels of homelessness, according to Netty Horton, Chief Executive Officer of CatholicCare Melbourne.
Launching the Australian Catholic Bishops' 2018–2019 Social Justice Statement, 'A Place to Call Home: Making a home for everyone in our land', she reflected on her work since arriving in Australia over 30 years ago, assisting people who were homeless as an outreach worker.
'I learned about the high prevalence of mental health and addictions, and a range of complex needs. I learned that homeless women were the most stigmatised even within the homeless population.
But mostly I learned about the absence of positive relationships.'
