Edmund Rice national apology to child sexual abuse survivors
Last week in Canberra Edmund Rice Education Australia, which has responsibility for more than 50 Catholic schools and entities, delivered a National Apology to the survivors of sexual abuse in their schools.
Last week's Edmund Rice national apology in Canberra was a moving event that captured the emotion and the significance of the occasion. EREA Executive Director Dr Wayne Tinsey acknowledged that the sexual abuse of young children is "part of a destructive and shameful reality in our national history and we are totally committed to ensuring it never happens again." He said EREA hopes the national apology will help in the healing process and be a step towards re-establishing trust.
When a Catholic Community reaches out with honesty, goodwill and integrity there can be optimism for reconnection and healing.
The Tasmanian government has been called upon to help fund a compensation scheme for some victims of child sexual abuse with authorities having been warned some Tasmanian survivors will die before they receive redress.
Rome conference to address safeguarding children online
An international congress in Rome this autumn will bring together experts to focus on the problem of online sexual abuse of minors and how to better safeguard children on the internet.
The meeting to be held from 3-6 October will be hosted by the Pontifical Gregorian University's Center for Child Protection and will conclude in an audience with Pope Francis during which he will be presented a "Declaration on Child Dignity in the Digital World."
Royal commissioner Peter McClellan led the tributes to Mr Anthony Foster at his state funeral earlier this week. Mr Foster, 64, was a constant presence at Royal Commission hearings with his wife, Chrissie, supporting survivors of child sexual abuse particularly in the Catholic Church.
