APCAN has released its 2016 National Child Protection Week (4 to 10 September) posters.
The Stronger Communities, Safer Children poster illustrates this year's theme with a drawing from Shannon Kassell from Dubbo College, Delroy Campus.
National Child Protection Week, now in its 26th year, supports and encourages the safety and wellbeing of Australian children and families through the Play Your Part Awards, events, programs and resources.
This week the South Australian Government released its Royal Commission report into the state's child protection systems.
Last week the Federal Government announced a Royal Commission into the Northern Territory's juvenile justice system.
And nationally, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child sexual abuse continues to uncover the way in which many, many different organisations dealt with historical complaints of abuse.
Never before have our community and our lawmakers' attention been so sharply focused on the failures of individuals and institutions to protect children.
The Queensland government revealed it would not table laws to "remove past deeds" which have been part of settlement claims in cases of child sex abuse.
It has cited potential "far-reaching and unintended consequences" of legislating to override legal barriers preventing repeat claims, saying a national redress scheme may be "more appropriate".
Child protection recommendations need to be considered by SA parliament
The SA State Opposition has called for Parliament to be recalled so some 260 recommendations from the Child Protection Systems Royal Commission can be implemented as soon as possible.
The final report by Commissioner Margaret Nyland into the SA child protection systems was provided to the SA Government on 5 August 2016.
Further hearing date in Australian Defence Force public hearing
The Royal Commission's public hearing into the Australian Defence Force (Case Study 40) will recommence for a further day of hearing in Sydney on Friday 26 August 2016.
The Royal Commission had previously held a public hearing in Sydney from Tuesday 21 June 2016 to Thursday 30 June 2016.
