Labor commits to national redress scheme

The Truth Justice and Healing Council has welcomed the announcement that a Federal Labor Government would invest $33 million to implement National Redress Scheme for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse.

This is the first positive commitment from a political party, state or Federal, to the Royal Commission's redress proposals.

It is now, more important than ever, to hear how the Turnbull Government intendes to respond to the Royal Commission's redress proposals.

Frankly speaking...

It was great news this week when the ALP federally came out and fully backed in the Royal Commission's redress recommendations  but it is the Government that we are all waiting to hear from.

Perhaps they are silent because they are negotiating with the South Australian Government which has again this week poured cold water over the Commission's redress plans.

If South Australia continues to snub the Commission's proposal there will be many hundreds of child sexual abuse survivors in that state who will miss out or receive next to nothing for the abuse they endured in state homes and other South Australian government institutions.

In an unambiguous leader on Monday the paper described the Royal Commission's redress proposals as giving 'Malcolm Turnbull's government a practical blueprint as well as an historic opportunity to exercise the moral leadership which has been so long lacking on this issue. "

Victorian Children's Commissioner retires

Bernie Geary OAM, the Victorian Commissioner for Children and Young People since 2013, has announced his retirement this week after more than 40 years of service to Victoria's young people.

"From his years of experience, both on the ground and in executive roles, Bernie's wisdom has contributed significantly to the work of the Royal Commission, particularly in relation to out of home care," Francis Sullivan said.

Retired Supreme Court Judge Frank Vincent, QC will commence as Acting Principal Commissioner when Mr Geary retires on 7 December this year.
