Following the recent Royal Commission hearing into child sexual abuse at the St Joseph's orphanage just out side Rockhampton local Bishop Michael McCarthy has outlined a series of measures to handle allegations of child abuse.
The Diocese has established a hotline for victims of abuse in the region and has appointed a response coordinator, Melissa Davey, to handle new allegations of abuse.
It's been a heavy couple of weeks in Ballarat. The Royal Commission hearing has rightly brought to the surface more evidence of the deep and lasting impact of the terrible crimes committed there against children by clergy in past decades. It has also exposed, yet again, the inadequate response of the Church to allegations of child sexual abuse.
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is seeking community views on its latest issues paper looking at the criminal justice system including police responses and prosecution processes to child sexual abuse in institutional contexts.
The Truth Justice and Healing Council is currently considering its response.
The past week has seen a firestorm of commentary and reporting following a 60 Minutes report featuring a member of the Pope's advisory council on child sexual abuse and his criticisms of Cardinal Pell.
The debate has also been driven by the highly charged two week Royal Commission hearing in Ballarat which finished leaving more questions than answers.
