Mary MacKillop Mass @ the WIN Entertainment Centre | IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Mary MacKillop Mass a Full House!

The Diocesan Mass on this Sunday 31 October (2.30pm) at the WIN Entertainment Centre is officially a full house and is set to eclipse the record set during the Diocesan World Youth Day Mass in 2008 for the largest single religious event in the history of the Illawarra region.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our Diocese to gather, united in prayer and fellowship, to celebrate St Mary of the Cross and give praise to our God for the gift of her life.

If you are registered to attend

Seating allocations for parishes, schools and communities have now been finalised and you can download the final allocations HERE. This download also contains important information for those people with a disability or limited mobility.

We suggest that you arrive by 1.30pm in order to ensure you are ready to find your seats when doors open at 2pm.

If you are not registered to attend

Unfortunately, the venue is now full. We still encourage you to join in prayer on the day (HERE).

Finally, we do ask that only registered people attend on the day. If additional members of the community who are not registered do attend, this will effectively mean that there will not be enough space for those who have registered.

Faith & Life News in the Diocese of Wollongong

Loving and Provident God,
We give you thanks for the life and goodness of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
You placed within her heart the desire to promote the love of Jesus
in the lives of little children through education.

Her loving and compassionate heart led her to a life of service to the poor
and to the neglected men, women and children of society.
Inspired by her example may we follow in her footsteps
With a joyful heart and live by her motto:

"Never see a need without doing something about it."

Women's Weekend of Prayer
"I believe there is no alternative for women except contemplation, if they are to avoid the trivialization of their own religious experience... The contemplative love experience, which is beyond conscious control and is not given on demand, is concerned not for the image of God...but with God...What is critical to see is that one has to allow the experience to take place through a love that is gradually welling up from the ground of one's being." Constance Fitzgerald in Women's Spirituality edited by Joann Wolski Conn

The Retreat is for women, by women, with women. Retreatants will participate in contemplative silence, communal prayer and reflection on women's ways of prayer which enrich the weekend.

Pastoral Planning eNewsletter - Important Information on the 3rd Plenary

Second Plenary Session a Success!

Over 250 people participated in the Second Pastoral Planning Plenary Session at St Patrick's College, Campbelltown on Saturday 18 September. People were very engaged with the process and a large amount of feedback was received both on the draft actions and how the plan can be integrated and implemented.

A full report will be published in the Summer edition of Journey Magazine due out in December.

Third Plenary Session Cancelled

Because of the success of the Second Plenary Session and the overall engagement in the process, there is no longer a need for a Third Plenary Session. As such, the Third Pastoral Planning Plenary Session scheduled for 13 November 2010 has been cancelled.

The two main aims of the Third Plenary were:

  • To seek endorsement of a plan that integrated all the various proposed actions; and
  • To seek endorsement of an effective way of implementing the plan.

Because we had to move the date of the Second Plenary back a month (due to the Federal Election), we found we had time to develop these ideas and bring them to the Second Plenary.

Further, the Second Plenary gave resounding support for integrating the plan, and clear direction on how not to implement the plan, and what was required for effective implementation. The Steering Committee feels very confident that we can now proceed to develop a draft plan without needing a Third Plenary.

We do want to keep in regular touch with all participants in the planning process, however, and so regular interim information will be made available to you through Journey Magazine, and through eNewsletter Updates such as this.

It is proposed that there will be a launch of the plan in February 2011, and that members of the Steering Committee will then revisit all the groups we consulted early in 2010, reporting on what happened to their proposals and how the plan is going to work.

What's the latest?

Since the Second Plenary Session, all the feedback received on the draft actions and identity, hope and calling statements has been processed and given to Bishop Peter and the Pastoral Planning Steering Committee. Over the past couple of weeks Bishop Peter has been consulting with some of his key advisory bodies including the Council of Priests and the Senior Executive Council in relation to the draft actions in light of the feedback received at the Second Plenary.

Their feedback has been invaluable. Dr John Honner is currently in the process of revising the draft actions into a summary document giving greater prominence to the theology and the strategies implicit in the actions, so that in the coming weeks, members from the Steering Committee will be able to meet with other Diocesan councils and committees for their feedback, including:

  • Diocesan Finance Council
  • CatholicCare Advisory Council
  • Diocesan Schools Council
  • Catholic Development Fund Advisory Council
  • Committee for the Aged
  • Committee for People with Disabilities and their Families
  • Diocesan Liturgical Committee
  • Diocesan Justice, Ecology and Peace Council
  • Diocesan Council for Catholic Women
  • Diocesan Stewardship Support Committee
  • Multicultural Council

Social Justice Thought For The Week

"Great care and concern are to be shown in receiving the poor and pilgrims, because in them more particularly Christ is received; our very awe of the rich guarantees them special respect."   Rule of Saint Benedict, Chapter 53.

St Theresa

In case you are not aware!, Saint Theresa is known as the Saint of the Little Ways, meaning she believed in doing the little things in life well and with great love. She is represented by roses... May everyone who receives this message be blessed?

Saint Theresa's Prayer

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be confident knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

Spirituality of Aging
6 Day Guided Retreat on Ageing
A retreat for older people, based on the belief that the evening of life is a season to love the things of God, the people of God and be one in God.  It is said that the focus of the first half of life is to learn how to make the outer journey.  The task of the second half is embracing the inner journey of the soul. Whether one is just stepping into this stage of life, or is well along its path, the invitation offered is gentle hospitality towards oneself, others and God.  We attend to deepening our intimacy with God in company with Jesus, as we continue, or embark upon this last and greatest stage of our life's journey. This retreat enables us to bring the workshops and seminars on aging and retirement to the deeper level of prayer and relationship.

Invitation | Second Plenary Session - Pastoral Planning

Hi All

I am writing to invite you to our Second Pastoral Planning Plenary Session on Saturday 18 September (10am-2.30pm) at Saint Patrick's College Campbelltown (4 St John's Road, Campbelltown).

Our Working Groups (with the assistance of Reference Groups) have been working hard over the past three weeks developing actions for the draft goals that emerged out of our First Plenary Session in June.

The purpose of the Second Plenary Session is to come together again as a Diocese and consider the draft actions of the Working Groups, prioritise them and propose additional actions if necessary.  Therefore, we want as many people to participate as possible!

We will provide you with preliminary information on the draft actions before the Second Plenary Session via Journey Magazine which is due out mid September, so look out for that.

In addition to the information in the invitation flyer (below and attached), please note the following:

  1. RSVP IS ESSENTIAL for catering purposes.  Morning Tea and Lunch will be provided with vegetarian options.  You can RSVP by replying to this email.
  2. We will provide crèche facilities if there is a demand.  Please let us know if you require crèche facilities in the RSVP.
  3. The venue (Saint Patrick's College Hall) has disabled access.
  4. AUSLAN interpreters for the deaf community will be provided on the day. Please advise in your RSVP if you require this service.
  5. If you require help with transport to and from the event, please let us know when you RSVP, and we may be able to assist in connecting you with people in your community that will be attending.  I will advise in a later email in relation to parking facilities.

Please forward this invitation to anyone that you think would be interested in attending and please continue to pray for our Diocese as we journey ahead.  I look forward to seeing you at the Plenary Session.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via this email or Jane Edwards on 4253 0899. I can also be contacted on 4253 0902.

God Bless

Daniel Hopper
