Region Ready to Welcome the World

As the World Youth Day (WYD) Cross and Icon departed Wollongong on the final leg of its pilgrimage to Sydney, the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong announced a program of local events for visiting international pilgrims that has been put together to showcase our world-renowned Aussie hospitality and provide an unforgettable experience for both visitors and locals.

Known as 'Days in the Dioceses', the program is described as a four day cultural celebration to be held in the week leading up to WYD08.

Close to 2,000 international pilgrims will be based across the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands from 10-14 July, with 7,000 visitors expected to visit Wollongong for the local WYD festivities – the largest number of visitors at any one time in the history of the region.

WYD pilgrims will be arriving from over 20 countries including the USA, Italy, Germany, England, France, Poland, Syria, Latvia, The United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Columbia and Brazil.
